NOTES AND COMMENTS

[BY GMKCOE.I Thoso interested should noto that entries for all events at tho Woodvillc Meeting close on Friday next. 'l'ho Demosthenes colt Informal has had fivo races so far this season, atid has been successful three times. His wins include the Welleßley, Avondale, and Auckland Welcomo Stakes. The youngster referred to is not a big one, but ho is built 011 powerful lines and can gallop. A fullsister to him, also 011 tho small side, realised 550 guineas at the Ohristchurch sales last week.

The win of Chortle in tho Avondalo Dap evidently impressed tho Auckland Bportsmen, for the Multifid gelding, despite his burden of lOst. 41b„ was made favourite in tho City Handicap 011 Saturday. He ran a good race, but failed to oonecde 291b. to Mullingar and 141b. to Toa Tore.

Hineamaru, runner-un to Informal in tho A.R.O. Welcomo Stakes, was in a similar position at Avondalo the week previous. Hineamaru is an Australian-bred filly, liy Posiedon, and was purchased by Mr. E. Aliaon at tho Kandwick sales last year.

The 1 win of Teka in the Metropolitan Handicap <on Saturday was thoroughly well deserved, as the Mystification geldine had run two good races in tho Cup and Jockey Club Handicap. Teka is a most consistent performer, and when at his host ho is very hard to dispose of up to twelve furlongs. His win on Saturday was by far the most important yet achieved by tho Hastingsowned gelding.

Though only opposed by an unknown Quantity in Mortham, the champion maro Doßort Gold gave a bifjger return in the Stead Gold Cup on Saturday than sho has dono since her two-year-old carccr. This i.s extraordinary, but is easily explained. The facts aro that not many people bothered to go near tlio totalieator, and tho stuff handled under forty pounds. Finmark, the full-brother, to EBtland, is a consistent but unlucky horse. 80 far ho liae not been out of a place in his races,

but he is still a maiden. He seems to be a Bimilar liorae to his redoubtable relative, and it will be remembered that the three-year-old was beaten several times last season, but 110 subsequently mado good in the autumn, and wound up the season by winning tho Manawatu, Sires' Produce Stakes and tho Manawatu Stakes. Finmark is a smart beginner, but as yet he is nothing brilliant, but he alwayß finishes on well in his races, and should be seen at his best when the youngsters are covering a bit more ground in their races. After being passed in at tho Ohristchurch sales 011 Thnsday, tho Demosthenes —Cheronia filly was later on purchased by the Wellington owners, the Messrs. Riddiford.
