The Karamii left Nauier last night for Wellington, wliero she is due this morning. The vessel will load cargo for Napier, and sail to-night. THE KABTJ SOLIJ. ITe'srs. Reese Bros., of Ghristehurtih, have bought the small steamer Kam from the Union Company, to replace, the Opouri, which was wrecked at Greymouth. The vessel yesterday came round from the Blip, where she had been laid up for some time, and will sail to-day for Nydia Bay to load timber for Lyttelton. From the latter port sho will go to Timaru to loud produce for Lyttelton and Wellington. Captain E. A. Cox, late of the Opouri, has taken command of the Karu. Messrs. M'Arthur, Jeffries and Co. are the local agents for Reese Bros. ENTRANCE TO WANGANUT. The Wangantii Harbourmaster (Contain P. M'liityre), in his report to the boerd at its last mectine, «id:—"The last test made re set at entrance was on October 2 in company with Captain Black. A submerged buoy was dropped in midohannel inside tlie moles, whioli went straight out and over tho bar, and then turned slightly to the westward. The conditione of the weather and tide were, as follow:- 1! hours ebb, wind west, fresh breeze, nea moderate. I intend to make further testa when weather conditions permit." Commencing on Saturday October 27, tho Customs officials will make a search of all paasengcrs' luggage taken on board any steamer leaving Sydney or other ports. This precaution has been applied to overseas shipping for some time past, but recent happening have made it necessary to take every jossible inoasuro to protect all tho shipping. The search 13 thorough, and. , occupies a considerable time.
The Kakapo loft. Greymouth at 2 rt.m. yesterday with coal for this port. Tho Kamo will leave Greymouth this afternoon with coal for Wellington. Tile Ngakuta, is due to-day from Greymouth. A full cargo of coal will he discharged here.
Tho Regulua is due this mornin; from Wanganui, and will fail at 5 p.m. for Xcl6on, Westiport. and Greymouth. The depth of water at the entrance to the Wanganui Eiver has improved slightly during the past month, there uow ucing 18ft. at high water spring tides. Tlie death occurred at his residence, Oorunna. Avenue, on Sunday, of Mr. Robert Oolville Smith for some years Harbour signalman, Mount Victoria. Signal Station. The late Mr. Smith joined the service of the board in 1850, and was appointed signalman a,t Mount Victoria in 1907, retiring on superannuation in June this year. The Harbour Board's flair was flown at half-mast yesterday out, of respect to the deceased.
The John is duo this morning from Wanganui, and will sail this afternoon for Timaru, Oamaru, and Dunedin, receiving cargo until 3 p.m. The local agents of the O. Rcfriperating Co. expect that tho Tainui and tho Mana will arrive here on Thursday or Friday from Wanganui. anil will return the same day.
The Ifimitaugi, which left Lyttelton on Saturday night for Chatham Islands, i 3 eipocted to arrive at Wellington on Tuesday next. The vessel will call at Lyt-. teltou before coming here. The Hincmoa left Kaipara yesterday for Onehunga, trim which port the vessel is due at Wellington on Thursday. Tho Amokura will sail probably to-day on her southern cruise.
The Wootton is due to-night Irnm Lrttelton, and will sail to-morrow for the same port.
As there will be a holiday on the Lyttelton wharves on Friday the Mararoa"rrill not. receive cargo at Wellington on Thursday. •
