PATRIOTIC WORK
QUESTION OF HONORARIA,
At last evening's meeting of the War Funds Collecting Committee, Mr. Yal Atkinson raised objection to the voting of Jionoraria to the secretary and the treasurer. This, he said, was a bsd precedent, and would have a bad effect on the public niind and on future collections. Public criticism should not be invited by voting money away in such a manner.
Mr. 31. Carr differed from Mr. Atkinson. Ho stated that Mr. Phelps had taken over the secretarial duties under pressure from other workers, and was not an independent man whom they could ex.nect to devote his own business time to the work of the committee without some compensation. Mr. Phelps said he had not asked for the position, and would not accept any monev.
It was then suggested thnt the difficnlty might bo overcome by the establishment of an independent fund.
Mr. Pheins repealed that ho would not accept anything.
The meetimr reined very nenrty vries of thanks to Mr. Phelps and Mr". M'lntosh for their work as secretary and treasurer.
