NOTES AND COMMENTS
[BY GIiENCOE.) The V.R.C. Meeting will open at Fiemington ou Saturday. Two hot favourites during tho afternoon may bo Biplane, in tho V.R.C. Derby, and Lanius in tho Melbourne Stakes. Starter It. 13. Harley passed through here, yestorday on his way north to officiate at the Avondalo Meeting. There is a likelihood of him having to dispatch a record field in the Maiden Handicap on Saturday, there beiug thirty-lour acceptors. Sportsmen throughout New Zealand will learn with regret of the death of J. S. O'Neill, tho well-known Hastings trainer. He had been alliug since visiting liiucarton for the Grand National Meeting. A little over, a week ago he entered the Hastings Hospital, but succumbed ou Sunday last. Snub has been engaged in the Ashhurst Cup, as have several other North Island horses that claim engagements at Riccarton next week. Westcourt, who is engaged in the Melbourne Cup this your. Ims 141b. less than weight-for-age against the 21b. more when lie was beaten a bond by l'atrobas in 1915. Form Up gave the onlookers at lticcarton a ta6to of his ability to gallon early this week. He finished up a six-furlongs sprint in bold style, and made many friends by his showing. Tho victory of Bronzetti will entail a 101b. penalty in the Melbourne Cup, making his weight 7bl. 101b. Desert Gold was allowed to stride out over a mile at Riccarton on Tuesday, and the style in which sho got through her task demonstrated clearly that sho has lost nono of her brilliancy. Her tinio was easily the best registered before, breakfast, and though she appeared to be doing her best at the finish it was an attractive performance, seeing that she went, alone all tho way. The first half mile look 49 3-sscc.,' and the full journey luiin. 42 l-ssec.'
A southern writer says the best, gallop registered at. Riccarton on Tuesday was that of Eicry Cross over a mile. lie ran the first three furlongs alone, being brought homo by Partisan, whom he beat in a good finish. The lime was fast, and the Glenapp gelding was carrying a good weight. Fiecy CroBS Is a freo track worker, but he is also a solid customer in a. race. He has not been much talked about in connection with the Slewards' Handicap, but, his performance on Tuesday will bring him into increased favour. He was responsible for a good performance when 1m finished third in the Great EsMcr Handicap, and his ability as a stayer will servo him well in tho big scrint ri.ee uext Monday.
Iu discussing Caolfleld Gup running, the Melbourne. "Herald" says: "Dempsßy was not burdened with instructions. He was told to rido his own race, the only thing that was impressed on him Leing that Bronzetti was «, stayer, and had one final run. Dcmpsey nuraed the coit for that effort. Broijzetti was lucky to Eecure a passage on the inßide in tho straight, which made all the difference between victory and defeat. Dempfsey's bold trctica won tho Guy for Bronzetti's owners. Now the most-sought-after jockey in Australia, Dempsey mußt look back with no little amusement to-the timo whe.n the stipends ary stewards told him to Ftand down until he had had more experience.'' A fatal accident occurred cn October 20 at the Moonee Valley racecourse to Mr Arthur Olarke, head of the firm of Messrs. Joseph Clarke and Co.. auctioneers, Dandenong. Mr. Olarko, who was well known in hnnting circles, was taking part in a rehearsal of the mock hunt proposed to bo held at the M.0.0. Carnival. After he had ridden over six low hurdles a mishap occurred at the seventh junij, the horse nilseating his rider «nd falling heaTily upon , *<. jal at onoo cvi<l ent thai "Mr. Clarke had been seriously injured, and medical aid was summoned nromjitlv, but the injured man died shortly after a, doctor arrived on the sceiio.
