STUBBORN FIGHT WITH A SUBMARINE FRENCH BARQUE'S PLUCKY STAND. London, October 12. The French sailing ship Blanche fought a submarine for two hour's aiid a half, but was finally torpedoed. The explosion killed the captain and many of the crew. A patrol boat picked up fifteen survivors. [The Blanche was a four-masted, steel barquo of 3101 tous.] SUBMARINE MIKE OFF AUSTRALIAN COAST. Melbourne, October 1.1 Tho Hon. J. Cook officially announced that mine-sweepers from Sydney on Wednesday exploded a submarine mine, of enemy origin, off Gabo Island (off the eastern, extremity of Victoria), within hail of vessels travelling between Sydney and Melbourne—Press Association. AMERICAN FLEET IN THE WAR ZONE SPLENDID SPIRIT OF FRATERNITY. Washington, October 12. Admiral Mayo, Commander-in-Chief of the United States Atlantic Fleet, has returned from an inspeotjon of tho American Fleet in European waters. October 14, 5.5 p.m.) Rio de Janeiro, October 12. The utilisation of the German interned steamers has been settled by joint agreei inent with tho Allies. Brazil will em--1 ploy forty-two steamers, aggregating | 250,000 tons. Eighteen of the eteamerß j will trade between the United States and 1 Europe, and tho remainder between !
