A WILD WEEK-END

FIERCE NORTH-WESTERLY GALE. A howling noj"lh-westerly gale swept the city on Saturday and continued yesterday and last night. On Saturday evening and early on Sunday morning the gale was at its worst, and it left a trail of minor damage in .the shapo of levelled fences, broken chimneys, and uprooted tTees. Portion of the roof of a wool store in the course of erection on Thomdon Quay was blown off. Owing to difficulty in securing bricklayers the roof had been gone on with ahead of the rest of tho building. The Taniwha.a fishing launch, anchored in Evans Bay, was driven on to the rocks by the gale at about 6.30 a.m. yesterday. There was a heavy sea, and the boat dragged her anchor. She is badly damaged.
