MAGISTRATE'S COURT
USE OF OBSCENE LANGUAGE. . At the Magistrate's Court yesterday Mr. S, li. M'Carthy, S.M., presided. A returned soldier, named Edward Nordlund, was charged with behaving in, a disorderly manner in Moleswort'h Street while drunk, also with using obscene language. It was disclosed in evidence that Nordlund created a disturbance outside the Metropolitan Hotel. He had his coat off and wanted to fight. Inspector Marsack explained that accused had not long returned from the front, and asked that the man be leniently treated. The Magistrate addressing Nordlund said that if ho wished for lenient treatment ho must consent to a prohibition order being issued. To this the accused agreed. A prohibition order was issued, to bo effective in tho .Wellington and Hult Licensing Districts for 'a, period of twelve months. On the second charge of using obscene, language he was eonvictcd, and ordered ta come up'for eeiitonco when called upon. Thomas Keevc, against whom there were several previous convictions, was charged 1 with being found drunk in Buckle Street, also with using obscene language. There were sixty-three previous convictions against the. accused. After hearing tho evidence of tlireo constables and of the accused himself, the Magistrate sentenced Boeve to six months' imprisonment for using obscene language, and convictod and discharged liiin for drunkenness. "Hero is the case of a, drunken man making himself a nuisance," remarked Inspector. Marsack, when Patrick Cooney stepped into the dock, charged with being drunk, also with committing a grossly indecent, act in Buckle Street. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges, and was fined .£3, in default seven, days' imprisonment, and on the second .charge he was convicted, and ordered to como up, for sentence when called upon, and a. prohibition order was issued against him to be operative for twelve months. For insobriety Minnie Campbell was fined 205., with tho alternative of seven days' imprisonment. One* first offender was fined 205., in default 18 hours' imprisonment, and. another, a returned soldier, was. convicted and ordered to come iip for sentenco when called upon. The cases against 'Thomas W, Yowijt and Frederick Charles Howell, charged with inciting a seditous strike of seamen engaged in the coastal trade, and that-they did conspire together and with other persons unknown lo incite a strike or seamen, were adjourned to Tuesday next. Gill, to recover tho sum ot' <£31 165., value of two packages of goods', comprising si* dozen Bheumo, 3 gross Progandru, and 2 gross Nerviiie, entrusted to the defendants 011 January,24. .1917, for delivery to the Auckland Drug Company, the said packages not being so delivered, A carter in the-employ of tho defendant company gave. a> receipt for the goods. After hearing the ovidencc the Magistrate gave ■judgment for plaintiffs for tho full amount claimed, .£3l' 10s., with costs totalling .£6.25. ■ j
