VESSELS POSTED AS "MISSING." Half a dozen vessels were posted as "missing" at Lloyd's recently, which is the largest list which has appeared at Lloyd's so far, says "Fairplay" (London), in its issue of May 17. Four oE them were steamers and two were sailing vessels. The most important loss was the .Tumuli, owned by the Mercantile Steamship Company, which was bound for ludia with a. cargo of salt, and disappeared after passing Vorim last February. She was built in 1902, of 4152 tons gross. The llaberton, missing on a voyage from Blyth to London, was owned by Cory Colliers, Ltd., and was built in 1894, of 1443 tons cross. Tho Bracfield, missing on a voyage from Cork to Cardiff, was formerly the Ashford. She. was a vessel of 427 tons gross, built in 1892. ami was owned by Mr. T. M. Collier, of Dublin. In all three cases there is no evidence of loss, but it would almost appear that the.vessels a.re missing owing to, a war peril. The barque Avienjore, missing on a, voyage from Halifax to Rochcfort, waa built or wood in 1870, or 1109 tons register, and was owned at Sandef.iord, by M. L. Christensen. The steamer Kitwa has been missing for a long time, for she left Durhan on August 21 last for Majunga, a voya.ee whieli would only occupy a few days. The Jessie Ooala, was a small schooner, and
is missing on a voyage from Boston to St. Johu. WISHING LAUNCH ARRIVES. An unexpected, arrival in port yester* day morning was the well-known Lyttelton fishing launch Ngaru. The launch, which is about forty feet in length* is a vessel of 10 tons. She left Kaikoura at Bp.m. on Saturday and arrived off Is* 8 p.m. on Saturday and. arrived off Isanchored until yesterday uiorniufr. when sho entered tho harbour arid berthed at No. 33 Queen's Wharf at 10.30 a.m. er taking on board provision she sailed a Quarter of au hour later for Mana Island and Kapiti Island for fishing, rne small vessel is owned by J£r. Gbanes Bushett, who is her captain. Mr. Matt Anderson is mate.
POET OP WESTPORT RETURNS. The port of Westport returns for the month of July, 1917, are as follow :-Output of coal, 62,781.7 tons; export, 59.356.Z tons. . 1 Of this amount 2262 tons wslc ped to a foreign port. The export of timber was 249,874 sup. feet. During the month 50 steamers, representing 29,304 tons, entered the port, and 52 steamers, representing 32,369 tons, left the port. Ihe total tonnage for the month was oi.o/o tons.

The John will sail to-night, for Timaru. Dunedin, and Oamaru, returniug on Monday next. , r mThe scow Eunice is due to-day from timaru and will leave to-morrow for L.vttelt.ou with a general cargo. The directors of the Clan Line, Steamers, Ltd., recommend a dividend of 25s per share on the ordinary chares (bi P _i cent.), and £36,560 will be carried forward, as against £32,260 brought 111. An iuterim dividend at the same rate was paid in October. In September, 19b, a bonuu of 50 per cent, was given in ordinary shares from the reserve. The dividend for that vcar was 15 per cent., and the same rate w™ paid Tor 1914. For 1915 the rato was raised to 25 per cent, free of tax. Vessels under the. Japanese flag that passed through the Panama Canal 111 1916 numbered 53, with an aggregate tonnasrc of 195,443 tons. Tha total number of vessels of all nations using the canal was 1253. „ ... The. Acknowledging the economic value of Llovds, Germany has undertaken to launch a. rival institution. The new organisation, callcd the Marine Service Societv, waß formed at a convention of 400 shippers, underwriters • and commercial brokers in Hamburg, during the early part, of une.
