GREAT ALARM IN MASTERTON
VERY HEAVY DAMAGE. (B.v Telegraph—Snccial Correspondent.) Masterton, August G. Tho most violent shock of earthquake experienced in Masterton for many years occurred at twenty minutes past threo o'clock on Monday morning. The shock was preceded by a loud rumbling noise. Buildings swayed to and fro, crockery fell in all directions, furniture moved about, and the greatest alarm prevailed. The movement lasted for fifteen or twenty seconds, and was followed by a number of smaller shocks. Considerable damage' has been done in town and country. Many , chimneys have been moved and partially destroyed in Masterton, while the damage to crockery, in both shops and private residences, is very heavy. The shako appears to have beon more severely felt in the country than _in the borough itself. Hundreds of chimneys have been brought down in tho cast coast districts. In one or two cases flie falling bricks crashed through tho roofs of buildings and destroyed furniture. At To Ore Ore, Otalmao, Taueru, Branccpeth, Te Parae, Riddiford, Alfredton, and Tinui, scores of chimneys wero razed.
It is impossible to estimate the amount of damage done, but it must run into thousands of pounds.
