ARBITRATION COURT
A WORKER'S STATUS. The Court t>f Arbitration sat in WcllingUm yesterday. On tho Bench were the president (Mr. Justice Stringer) and Messrs. W. Scott and ,T. Jl'Cuilougii. An agreement on tho lines recommended by tho Conciliation Council wis reported by the pin-ties to the Wellington district hotel workers' dispute. His Honour said (■.hot tho parties were to bo congratulated upon , tho conciliatory spirit they had shown. The award will come into force on ,Tuno 25. and will operate for three years. Tho Court delivered its decieion on the question wliethe-r n. mnn working a. niiichino in a wire-mattress factory ehould receive pay as a furniture shop machinist. His Honour held that the worker must, in tho absence of a definition of "machinist" in the award, be regarded as being n. machinist for tho piirpo.so of tho award. Ho was therefore entitled lo be paid the wages fixed for a machinist under tho award. At tho hearing Jfr. Grenfell appeared for ihe employers and llr. Kennedy for tho union.
