CHAPLAIN-CAPTAIN M'MENAMIN
__ REQUIEM MASS. 'A large concourse of people of various creeds assembled at the Basilica, Hill Street, at 9.30 o'clock yesterday morning, when a solemn Requiem Mats was celebrated by Jlis Grace Archbishop O'Shea for the repose of the soul of tho Into Captain-Chaplain J. J. M'Menaniin, who was killed on active service in France a couple of weeks ago. / Among thoso who assisted at the Mass were:—Deacon, the Rev. Father ' ,T. O'Connor, S.M.; sub-deacon, tho Rev. P. Quealy; assistant priest, the Very Rev. T. M'Kcnna; master of ceremonies, the Scv. D. Hurley, S.M. The clergy present included tho Right Rev. Monsignor .T. M'Kcnna, V.G., Dean J. Holley, Rov. Dr. D. Kennedy, (he Rev. leathers M'Mauus, Travcrs, Doolaghty, F. Cullen, Maillard, Mahonov, Venning, Dovoy, Campbell,' Kimbell, M'Donald, Goiiclringcr, A. Cullen, .1. Cullen, Ryan, Outtrim, Schaefer, Forreslal, Giiinanc, Manga n, O'Sullivnn, V. J. Smyth, Dignan, Bowden, O'Beirne, Chaplain-Captains Doro, Connolly, Minogue, and O'Flynn. There, were- also in attendance Mrs. M'Menaniin, mother of -the deceased padre, and members of the family, the Hon. G. W. Russell, and the Mayor (Mr. .1. P. Luke). The military authorities were represented lij- Colonel-Surgeon Purdy, representing the Medical Service; Major Sleenian, representing tho Commandant; Captain Hill. Provost Marshall: Captain Cross, represent ins' the .Adjutant-Gen-eral; Captain Gibbs, representing Colonol Hume; Major A. A. Corrigan. Wellington district: Colonel J. 1). Purdy, and Lieutenant .Tervis. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Sir James Allen, Acting-Premier, and Sur-geon-General Henderson. Tho front seats were occupied by fully a hundred'members of the Forces. Many people travelled from Pctone and the Hutt to pay their last respects to tho mommy of the deceased. The Camp Commandant gave leave to men at Trenthain Camp desiring to be present. Mass'was sung by St. Patrick's Collego Choir, under the coiiduictorsh'ip of Father Schaefer. Mr. G. O'Meeghan presided at the organ.' The occasional sermon preached bv tho Rev. Father Gilbert, S.M., M.A., of St. Patrick's College, was in ell'ect a most generous tribute to the sterling worth of the late padro as a. man, ami to hi* loyal and dcvolcd services to tho Church in' his offi,ce as a priest. Special refcrenco was made to the splendid work of the Info Chaplain M'Menaniin in the Gallipoli fighting, where he daily risked his life in-his zeal to do all that man could lo bring cheer or comfort to the men who wove fighting.
