FARM LABOUR < THE NEEDS OF THE COUNTRY TRUSTEE BOARDS TO gIthER INFORMATION A memorandum dealing with the prorision of labour for the I'nrms has been issued to tho district trustee boards by the National Efficiency Board. "It is desirable/' state's tho board, "that no/tiino should bo-loat in ascertaining what labour wiU be required in'your district in connection, with the conduct of agricultural •and pastoral worjc during the ensuing' twelve months, more especially'shearing, ploughing, und harvesting. It is therefore Tequestod that you will bold a meeting: of. your Board of Trustees and make full .inquiries throughout your district, with a view to ascertaining what labour ,is now available in the various branches, . what reduction of labour is likely to take place'by tho- operation of the Military. Service Act, arid as to Low'far l>y cooperation, or other means the labour can bo organised, and the requirements met. "A circular lottcr was sent out by this 1 board to all the secondary schools in the Dominion, and a very large proportion of the boards of governors have consented to decrease the duration of/the spring holidays and to correspondingly increase the length, of tho summer holidays, so that there will be a certain amount of boy /labour available for assistance in the shearing sheds and other operations during tho summer holidays. It will-be necessary for this labour to be organised in. each district to the extent that the farmers- and station-holders who desire such, assistance will have to make, clear what accommodation they are prepared to provide and what number of boys they desire. It is probable that in manycases the town boys will prefer t.i go to their country friends, and the country boys will naturally l>e at their homp?. r AH this information requires to be worked up-in anticipation. In these cases "where they are prepared to teke in strangers it will be necessary to satisfy the schoolmasters and the parents of the boys that they will bo properly looked after. Tho rates of'wages will jiresumablv be those usually paid in the district. "The suggestion is therefore made that not only sTionld you get the information for your own district, but that you should set into touch with 'the trustee .boards in adjacent districts so that the whole country may be organised on a uniform schejne and systematic plan. ';
"It probably may be found to be (Ipsirable, when flie infonnation- is obtainrd, say in about a month's time, that the Commissioner should arrante for ileligates from tho various trustee.boards to meet together at some central point or points to exchange ideas and to arranger

for organisation ou similar lines throughout the districts.
_ "A further matter for your consideration is to ascertain as to how far an Increase of stock may be carried in certain portions of the district, and as to how far there is a probability of other portions being over-stocked. Also, it is desirable that inquiries should be imide so that some conclusion can be an-jved at as to what feed is available for carrying- tho stock through the winter, so that in case, thero should be a shortage in any place some co-operative and systein■atic urrangenient: can be mailo by 'which stock from certain districts could be depastured in other districts where an wtcess of feed exists." .. \ . Mr. Peter Luwson (Kcxdale Victory), president, said that dairy farmers during the past year had secured ample demonstration that it was necessary for them if they wished to protect themselves from blundering and ignorant politicians and their more ignorant advisers, to meet more .-frequently to discuss matters affecting their business, and coining to some mutual understanding as to what lines they should proceed upon, und then proceeding along tsose lines as a united body, not as a number of individuals out of touch with one another. It was resolved to form a council, consisting of the chairmen of oheeso companies, from Papatawa to iiaiparqro, v WHOLESALE PRODUCE PRICES Messrs.
