HUNGER-STRIKER SENTENCED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, June .7. Owen .Tames Francis Mlvee was tried by court-martial to-day on a charge of refusing lawful commands in neglecting to attend for medical examination on Mav 2. Ho pleaded not, guilty. After evidence was given,, accused said there was no law in which he had not acquiesced which could make him a soldier. Ho read a .statement, the tenor of which was that when the National Register was taken the Government gave a pledge that' it would not be nsed for military purposes, and that the Government had no intention of imposing conscription. His idea of patriotism did not conincide with, the official view. M*Kee wa-s found -guilty and sentenced io oleven. months' imprisonment/ When asked if ho had anything to say in mitigation of punishment, ne proceeded to make a statoment criticising Ministers of the Crown, which tho President 'declined to listen to. [M'Kee, a Socialist, and an activo antiJnilitarist, was arrested a week ago. After being handed over to the military police, he "hunger struck." Ho was released with the intention' of further proceedings being taken against him. On Wednesday lie was rearrested on the present charge.]
