SCOTS COLLEGE

*10 BE ESTABLISHED AT MIRAMAE. The council of Scots College las como 'to an. important decision v/itiiin the. past ifeiv'i days. Some months ago it became evident th.Vc if tlie college, now situate in Hobson Street, in tlie residencß for bo Jong occupied by tlie late ltrsi T. C. Wil-; liams, was to bo developed on the proper lines, it would have to provide ample 'room for expansion, and that in a locality ■ where the school -and ■ ifcß grounds ■ would not be hemmed in by city streets. The question of the, locality hits given the college authorities touch food for thought, as there are very many considerations to bo taken ■ into ; account _in what will practically lx> the-refounding of the institution on lines that will provide for all that is advantageous in college life. After inspecting many prospective sites in the 1 various suburbs, negotiations were entered into with Mr. Alec.' Crawford for the purchase of a block of land at Miramar. South, the property of his brother, Mr. C. J. Crawford. These negotiations have terminated in the purchase of between eleven iand twelve acres of land, situated between the Miramar Golf Club's links and the flat known as the Chinamen's 'gardens, and facing a Tond provided for but ,as yet not iormed, which Tuns south at right angles to Broadway, the street traversed by the Seatoun tram-line. The Situation is considered to, be pretty jrell ideal, by those ivho have gone into/ the matter. Of the total area about' two acres at the back aTe low foot hills, on' which the college buildings will be erect- : ed,, whilst stretched out in the foreground Avill be a flat of about ten acres for sports grounds and gardens. So far the college authorities have not, entered into the intricacies'of .plans, but that work will now l>e put in hand, and the building, or portion thereof, will be gone on with as soon as possible., With building material at top prices, the council may not deem it. advisable to proceed with the whole of the building, at first, but sufficient will be: erected to allow tHe work of the college to be conducted on the best lines. Points in favour of the site are its sunny aspect, its proximity to the sea at Eyall Bay, and at Seatoun, the fine , range, of hills that extend right over to the Heads at the back of tho property, and'its convenience to the city. The Scots College have a three years' lease of the Hobson. Street property .(an endowment of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board), of which about eighteen months have yet to run. As to whether that lease will be renewed rests with the future. i. |
