OPENING OF THE SEASON
LADIES' ASSOCIATION
I'ho Wellington Ladies' Hockey Association opened tho season on Saturday last, at iviu'ori Park, with a sevcu-ai side tournament. The 1 grounds were in excellent condition, though a little heavy after the rain overnight. Tho pliiy in tho first round was not up to standard. Ramblers A and University A each having an easy win. Public iTrust, after a .scramble, came out a winner by ono point over Ramblers B. To Aro School, receiving a handicap of ono point, defeat-' ed Huahati by 4' to 1. Tho surprise of the round was in the match Wellington Girls' College A and B teams. Tho B team, receiving a handicap of two lioints, wero not expected to win, but right from the start they kept things moving and had the satisfaction of beating the seniors by 5 points to 1.
in tho second round, University A defeated Public Trust by 9 to nil. University played well, showing good combinatio,n, while Public Trust lost many chances by hard hitting. The scorers for tho winners wero Misses Haase, Murliliy. and Ellis.
Ramblers A'did not civo To Aro School a chance. Playinc well together, they put up 18 points to nil, tho scorers being Misses Williams (3 goals), Lowo (2), >S. Simon (1).
Tho game between 'Ramblers A and University A was a good, hard contest, both teams playing sound hockey. Ramblers, playing with better combination, had a little tho better of the game, winning by I) points to 4. Misses Williams and Simon scored lor tho winners, while
Miss Ellis scored for University. Tho final gamo of tho tournament was tho greatest surprise, and without dfm'bt the best, game of the day. Tho Wellington Girls' Colleco B (a junior team) gave, the winners (Ramblers A) a great shock, and showed better hockey all round. Miss Skinner, in-goal, put up a splondid defence, clearing timo after time. Playing \\ith dash and good combination, College scored first. through Miss Martin. The spell ended in favour of College by 5 to 2'. In' the second spell play was very.fast, and all-in favour of tho younger team. Just before time was called Ramblers (Miss Lance) scored, making the score G all. Having to play a third round, Ramblers (Miss Simon) soon scored, .thus winning ' the tournament. The referees were Messrs. Smith, Selig, Kenn, Sherwood, and Cusack. The following are the results: — First Round. Ramblers AA. v. University B.nil. University A 12, v. Ramblers C. nil.
