TRADE WITH JAPAN
AND CERTAIN NEUTRALS. / '' ■ / The return of imports at New Zealand ports for the first quarter of 1917 reveals a very marked increase in the trade with Japan. The value of the Japanese goods imported into the Dominion during' January, February and March of the present year was -- .'£179,700, as compared with £79,502 for the corresponding period of 1916. ..The total value of Ne;w Zealand's imports from Japan in the year 1914 was £187,501, and in 1915 the value reached £348,671. It appears that the Japanese imports for the present year are going to be worth more than the German imports were in 1914/ the German total for that year (diminished by th. outbreak of war) having been £620,400. The German imports in 1913 were valued at £687,935. An interesting feature of the returns for the quarter is an' increase in. trade with the neutral countries that are 6 suspected of having been used as channels for some German goods. The following . figures show the value of imports for the first quarters of 1916 and 1917: ■■ 1916/ 1917. £ £ Denmark 18,774 6,658 Sweden 31,442 • 21,137 Switzefland ... 16,646 11,058 The trade with Netherlands and Norway shows slight decreases. Belgium's exports to' New Zealand, which were; worth £110;391 in 1914, declined .to £27,185 hi 1915. The value for the first quarter of 1916 was £2066 and " the total for the first quarter of 1917 is £181.' " ' .
