CRIPPLED SOLDIERS
HOSTEL'S FINE WORK. Among the enthusiastic patriotic workers engaged on behalf of returned soldiers probably none are doing more valuable work than those responsible for the conduct of the Returned Soldiers' Hostel at Newtown. The aftermath of war is subsidiary only to actual warfare itself, apd the lads who have borne the brunt of the battle often come back in a vastly different condition, physically and financially, than when they left to take part in the great adventure. It is in this direotion that tlie Keturned Soldiers' Hostel has done , invaluable work. The first annual report issued in connection with. the institution showed that Bince the hostel has been opened 13,-921 meals and '172.1 beds had up to that tirao been supplied to ireturned .soldiers and paid for, while 1931 meals and 685 beds had been supplied to men. who were for tho time being nj>t in a financial condition. .As.is to be expected, such an institution has proved of great assistance lo returned men, especially thoso who are "strangers in a strange ,land," or are remaining; here until tbev have the opportunity .of returning to their own kith and kin. Such an institution, howpver, nius be convenient to ilia city, and to meet the nx]uircmei& of returned soldiers who aro passing to and fro' tho lndios in chargo of tho hostel have decided to secure premises in a. more central position. Such a hostel will be especially boneficial to those men who are in a crippled condition, and with a view to raisinjr the necessary funds for purchasing such, tho Crippled Soldiers Art Union has been organised;,' and is expected to meet with hearty support.
