TERRACE SCHOOL

ANNUAL REPORT. The report of the Terrace School Committee to be presented at the annual meeting states:— > "During the year' a petition was presented to. Parliament asking for additional grounds for the school. The petition was referred to the Education Committee, who reported :■ "That, having regard to the pressing need for additional playground accommodation, and the requirements in various, parts of New Zealand for new sites for schools,' the. committee reconimonds -that the Government request the Minister of Education to prepare a scheme to deal with this subject in a comprehensive manner.' It will bo for the incoming committee to see that the scheme is not lost sight of. '/ i ■ "Messrs. Thomson and; Skinner were appointed delegates to the recently formed School Committees' Association. ".Finances continue in a satisfactory state,- thero being a ' credit balance of .£32 9s. 3d." The headmaster (Mr. George MacMortan) in. his report states:—"During the March quarter (1917) the attendance Was good, the average being 632. The infantile paralysis scare in the autumn of 191G affected the attendance considerably, but sinco then tlie health of the children has been good. The medical, inspection is now being better organised; the drill is being adapted to the needs of tho children; and those requiring special attention are organised in a corrective class. During the year the school contributed in money the sum of dt!l32 ITs. to various patriotic and bcnevolont organisations. In addition, a great deal of material, difficult to classify\ and catalogue, has been made up for the Red Gross and other . benevolent societies. Considerably over 470 of the old pupils have gone to tho front as soldiors. Of these a largo number havo been wounded, while over fifty have been killed."
