NEW SCHOOL OPENED

~' AT OHAEIU. Oliariu has long desired a new public school, and its desire was warranted.' so it was with a special pleasure that the residents of the valley asscm-., bled Wednesday afternoon at the opening of the new schoolhouse, a description of'which has already appeared in these column's. Suffice it to say that the new school has been built on up-to-date lines as regards light, and ventilation, and comfort, and will be a real boon to the children of the district. The opening was attended by Messrs. AV. H. Field, M.P., R. A. AA'right, M.P., AAV M. Allan, .and Thos. Forsyth, members of the hoard, who were accompanied by Mrs. Field. Apologies for absence we're received from the Minister of Education (the Hon. J. A. Hanan), and the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken (chairman of the Education Board). As the representative of th Ohariu district on the board, Mr., Field formally declared the school open, congratulating tho district on at length having acquired what had certainly. been a real need. Mr. S. Bryant, chairman of the School Committee, made a most interesting speech. The old school, which he as a boy had attended 40 years ago,' was 43 years old. For the past twenty years they had been, asking the board to provide a new school, and now they had achieved it he was sure it would be for the benefit, both physically and educationally, of the children of.the district.- Mr. Bryant holds something like a* record, having been chairman of the committee for 24 years. / '■ - _ One of the features of the little function was the singing of the children. One of tho numbers was a glee (written and composed by the headmaster, Mr. Dallaston), which dealt very cleverly with the event they were honouring. One of the children also recited "The Old School's Lament," an ode that was also written' by Mr. Dallaston. .The ladies of _ tho district provided afternoo_n_tea : in the new schoolhouse, and contributed .otherwise to what was a very happy little gathering.
