WELLINGTON TRADES COUNCIL

ANNUAL REPORT.

The annual report of the year's work was presented to the' Trades Council on Thursday night, and was adopted. Referring to general questions, the report states: —: ' "Mainly by reason of the activities of the Trades Council, the Government introduced legislation to regulato excessive rents during the war. Unfortunately the measuro was so mutilated while before the House of Representatives that the tenants have been put to much annoyance and expense to retain, any advantage that the Act allows over unfair landlords. "Legislation has beon asked for to overcome the difficulties arising out of the decision of tho Court of Appealinvolving the right of a union to secure compulsory preference to; unionists by agreement with, the employers. "Complaints coming to. band induced the council to protest to the Minister of Labour against the slackness of the Labour Department in the matter ot breaches. The Minister- declined to materially alter the policy of the Department, in view of tho fact that he was only the Acting-Minister during the absence of the Hon. Mr. Massey. ''During tho year now under review the council has been strengthened by the affiliation o fthe Engine-drivers, Engineers, and Letterpress Printers Machinist Unions."
