At the conclusion of the White City recruiting case Dr. Calcy and John Mitchell wore sentenced to eighteen months; Brinkman to twelve months, and Dr. Dow to nino months. Sergt.Major Sheppard was acquitted—Aus.N.Z. Cablo Assn. I'The allegations against ofhcials of the White City Medical Recruiting Board involved a charge of conspiring to obtain medical classification certificates fraudulently. The six persons accused wero: Se.i-gt.-Mnjor William Sheppard, Dr. Andrew Robertson Dow, John Burn M'Queen Mitchell (civilian paymaster), Charles Joseph Roughly Riley (medical clerk), William Burch. Calev (medical practitioner), and Hugh Brinkman (chief clerk). It was stated by a detective that he was first examined by Dr. Dutch, Berkeley Street, and afterwards met Mitchell, who advised him to go to the .White City that afternoon, and "droi> the Sergfc.IFnjor (Sheppard) a' quid." Witness did so, and on" seeing Mitchell subsequently, handed the latter £65. Later ho wont beforo Dr. Caley, but through some mistake ho was pnssed for "Class 1, General Service." Dr. Caley, Mitchell told witness, could' do nothing for him, but if he was not called ui> ho would bo entitled to another examination in two months. Evidence wan noxt called to prove that Mitchell had been given a certificate by Dr. Dow stating that ho (Mitchell) was unfit for military service, and a letter from Dow to Mitchell was read in which the donor asked the sergeant-major's assistance "in another ballot for liiodical men that was coming round.
