THE RECENT CHANNEL RAID
FANTASTIC ACCOUNT FROM BERLIN (Rec. March 1, 8.30 p.m.)' London, March 1. An official report from Berlin gives a fantastic account of the torpedo-boat raid in tho Channel. "Wβ raided beyond tho Dover and Calais line, and entered tho mouth of the Thames. The British destroyers stationed in the Channel scattered after a fierce artillery fight, and avoided further action by a hasty retreat. We did not succeed in inflicting loss or damage. The enemy was not further observed hero. Another section raided, and not finding any guard proceeded as far as .the North Foreland into the Downs, and bombardod tho coast defence works at Margate and vessels quite near the coast. No commercial traffic was observed." It is hardly necessary to state that this account is a travesty of the facts. IN THE BALKANS FIGHTING ON THE GERNAI. (Rec. March 1, 7.15 p.m.) London, March 1. Ul German. , report states: "The Italians strongly attacked our hill positions on tho Cerna salient, eastward of Paralovo. The attack failed,- with sanguinary losses."—Aus.-KZ. Cable Assn.-Reuter. THE KIDNAPPED GREEK ARMY ■MUTINY IN INTERNMENT DAMP. Lausanne, February 28. There was a mutiny I recently in the Greek internment camp at Gorlitz, wbiob caused a proclamation to lie issued by the Greek War Minister. The soldiers accused General Hajoupoulos of betraying them. He.promised their roturn to Greece via Monastir, and instead they were deported to Germany. Hajoupoulos, fearing the consequences, left tho district.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [A. proclamation issued by the Greek War Minister a few days ago exhorted the soldiers to remain patient and enduring until the days of sorrow passed and tho sunshine returned. He appealed to the army to keep their eyes confidently turned to tho King and the Government. The better they endured their privations, the better their duty would he performed. The "banished" or "kidnapped" army referred to is the late garrison of Kavalla. When the Greek Government last year permitted tho Bulgars to occupy the territory east of the Struma, this garrison, without explanation, surrendered, and was marched off by the enemy. Since then there have been various reports as to its whereabouts, but it is generally understood that King Constantino had planned to use, it against General Sarrail's army.] NATIONAL SERVICE IN BRITAIN London, February 28. .During the debate m tho Houso of Commons on national service, many members urged tho necessity for an amendment clearly preventing the applicatiou of compulsion in any form. Au amendment was subsequently subnutted, and was dually adopted, preventing compulsory service, aud tho transfer of labour from one industry Io another by Oidor-in-Council or a Defence of the Realm Regulation. The Houso of Commons refused to omit Ireland from the scheme Tho Bill has passed through Commit-tee—Aus.-N.Z, Gable Assn.
