OCEAN YACHT RACE
,1 . . *—~ .. ~• CLYDE QUAY TO POET UNDEKWOOD. The annual ocean race for first-class yachts across the Strait and back was set down for Saturday and yesterday, but the Port Nicholson Yacht Club was unfortunate in its choice of week-ends. The boats which accepted were A. J. Petlierick's Eona (scr.), Mr. Cull's Kotiri (scr.), Mr. E, Bucholz's Wairere (30min.), and Mr. G. MTean's lolanthe (105min.). All started save the Eona. at about 6 p.m. on Saturday, but atthe Heads the yachts met with a very stiff southerly with a high sea, which made, it inadvisable to think of crossing the Strait, so they all returned to port. Early yesterday morning the lolaiitho put out again, made the trip under reefed conditions, and reached Clyde Quay again about 8.30 p.m. ■ Though the skies were grey and a strong westerly gale blew throughout yesterday a motor-boat picnic was held at Lowry Bay. Most of the launches put in an appearance, but the weather was against any degree of comfort on the smaller boats, most of which remained in the boat harbour:
