SOUTHERN WHEAT YIELD

Some further reports of good yields of grain have reached us as a result of this week's thrashing (says the "Oamiiru -Mail"). bo far tne biggest-yield per aero of wheat has been obtained at ttcdeliff, 011 the Canterbury side of the river, where ilr." 11. ltuddenklau had a caddock 'Of the Bordier variety .that averaged 61 bushels. From the Tokaralii district we'have heard of over 80 bushels an acre of Gnrton oats having been received from a paddock sown in April to provide green feed',- but not used for that 'purpose. J.u the same neighbourhood another farmer thrashed out a good bit over 70 bushels of Algerian oats per acre. Of course, these are exceptional yields. At the same time wo know of n number of. instances in which from 30 to 10 bushels of wheat per acre have been obtained. So far as thrashing of wheat has gone,- instances reported of less than 30 .bushels per acre have been fewer than the number that have exceeded that' figure. Thero are, of oourse, some poor, or comparatively poor, yields to he put to tiie test, but Hie indications are that the estimate of an a,veratre of 30 bushels ail acre for the country will lie fully realised. A crop of wheat grown by Mr. James Hedley, of Maorewhenua, which thashed out at G2 bushels to the acre proved tojie of excellent quality (says the "North Otago Times"), and went OGlb. to the imperial bushel.
