A NEW MOVE

—4 CENTRAL DEVELOPMENT FARM AT WERAROA. In tho course of a telegram stating that he was not able to attend the Levin Show, held yesterday, the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald) said: "The whole of the operations of the Weraroa Experimental Farm are being reorganised to make it the centre for the. agricultural development of the Dominion, and for this reason the institution will in future be known as the Central Development Farm. Another important feature will bo tho training of a number of suitably educated students as agricultural exports, whether for the service of the Department of Agriculture or for tho teaching of agriculture in secondary schools. A number of bursaries are being offered by the Education Department of the value of £50 a year each, to enable young men to take a course at'the Central Development Farm. In addition, my own Department is advertising for student assistants at a com- ' menciug salary equal to £50 per annum. It is hoped by theso two means a group of suitable young men will be obtained, and that as a result there will be available a few years henco a supply of men highly trained to deal with New Zealand's special agricultural problems. This, it is expected, will havo a far-reaching effect upon the fanning of tho Dominion in years' to coinß." Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., who read the Minister's telegram, said the Central Development Farm was likely to be of immense educational value. It meant, also, that instead of having tho experts of the Department of Agriculture in Wellington, they would be stationed at the farm, where they would bo of much greater value to the country. The Stato farms had been somewhat of a reproach in the past; it had always born felt (that. Ehe.v had nol; dolio as good work as they should have. The change which was being made was duo' largely to the present Minister.
