MOVE IN SHIPBUILDING. The London "Shipping World" of December 20, 1916, says:—The need for speeding up tho output of morchant ships is so urgent that it may bo taken for granted that the/policy initiated by the late President of the Board of Trnde will bo continued by his successor. Fortunately, there is some progress to record. Another furnace has been lighted in tho Cleveland district this week, and others arc to follow at the turn of the year, so that tho output of shipbuilding steel promises soon to bo increased in that district at least. Then on tho Wear, very encouraging reports havo been received of the now experiment in the pooling of labour. A start has been made in the way of transferring men to tho ships which can bo completed soonest; and, thanks to the fino spirit displayed by all concerned, the work is progressing very satisfactorily, and the arrangement looks like being a complete success. The result wiU be seen ere long in an increase in the number of ships launched and completed on that river. There are still ships waiting in the water for their engines, and likely to wait for weeks yet. It is no use hurrying forward the construction of tho hulls unless tho engines are ready. This is a necessary part of the scheme, and it demands energetic treatment. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain J. M. Drewette, who has been on holiday leave, took command of tho Monowai at Auckland last week. Captain A. T. Norton, who has been in temporary command of the Monowai, went to Dunedin by the vessel for instructions. Captain Saunders, late of the Kurow, has taken command of the Wairuna at Sydney, relieving Captain 8. Vint, who goes on transfer. Captain Crawshajj. of the Union Company's shore staff at Sydney, will take charge of the Kurow. Captain M'Lean, of, the Kamona, now at Auckland, is coming south by the Tarowora, and goes on to Dunedin for orders. Captain Martin has taken charge of the Kamona. Mr. L. Bonner, third mate of the Ngatoro, has come ashore, and has been replaced by Mr. W. H. Gower. Mr. J. Percy has signed on the as purser. ~ Mr. S. A. Murray, chief engineer of the Ngahero has come ashore on sick leave, and his place has been temporarily filled by Mr. Basire. ' ~,.,, ', Mr. A. H. Prosser, mate of the Monowai, has come ashore. Mr. G. MocDonald has ioined the Monowai as extra officer. The Himitangi will leave for Chatham Is-' lands at noon to-day, and will receive cargo up till 11 a.m. The first pilo of the new wharf which is being built for t£e Whakatane Harbour Board was drivon, last week (says on exchange). The Regulus is due from Terakohe to-day and will go on the slip for annual overhaul. Tho Himitangi leaves here at noon today for Waitongi (Chatham Islands) direct. She goes on from Waitangi to Lyttelton. Tho Kamo should leavo Greymouth today for Wellington with a full cargo of coal. The Tarawera was expected to leave Napier at 4 p.m. yesterday for Wellington. She leaves hero for Lyttelton and Dunedin to-night. 'The rtowhai will probably leave hore to-night for '• Greymouth to loud back to Wellington. Tho Kakapo is expected to leave for Westport to-night. She loads back to Wellington. Tho Otago dredge Progress was docked at Port Chalmers on Thursday last for survey. It has been decided to entirely reconstruct the dredge in view of, the shortage of tonnage, and it 18 expected that in a few months' time Bhe wDI bo running in the coastal trade. It is expected that the coastal auxiliary steamer Echo will get away to-morrow for Gisborno with a cargo of oil. She has been delayed in port owing to the scarcity of labour. Three hundred and twenty-six saloon and 165 steerage passengers booked passages to Lyttelton by tho Maori last evening. The small barque Manurewa left Newcastle on January 19 for Kaipara, with 492 tons of coal to discharge.
