SAILORS' FRIEND SOCIETY
There were large congregations on Sunday at all services at tho Sailors' Friend Society. A'Christinas tea was provided in the afternoon, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all'present. At the song service in tho evening, afc which there was again a full congregation, tho old year was bidden farewell, and the scrvico ended by the singing of "Eternal Father, Strong to Save." Associated with Mr. Moore, who officiated, was tho . Rev. Mr. Reader, of Thorndon Methodist Church.
On New Year's Day over 100 took part in an enjoyable picnic to delightful'grounds loaned for the occasion by well-wishers. Sports and games of all sorts were indulged in, and a football match was played by 'teams of sailors. Prize-winners at the sports were as follow:—Mathieson, Huntley, Quiuton, Campbell, Soatehard, Mason, Dye, Browster, Oeral, Daniel, Village, Robertson, It. Campbell, Evott. Now Year's Day's proceedings were brought to a close by a "very enjoyable concert arranged by Mrs. T. E. Jones. 'All the items, which included solos, trios, and recitations, were enthusiastically received. Tho following contributed to the programme: —Mesdames T. E. Jones, .Morgan, Macfarlane, tho Misses Jones, Dyinock, Messrs. Hauler, T. E. Jones, "and Capt. P. B. Macfarlane. Tho singing of "Aukl Lang Syne" aJid the National Anthem closed a pleasant entertainment.
