The Hon. G. W. Russell leaves foii Auckland by tho first express to-day; He intends to visit Tuakau, Hamilton, le Awamutu, and Te Kuiti, returning to Wellington on Friday of next weelw Commander Armstrong, who has been engaging men for the Motor Patrol Service, is to leave for England to-* wards tho end of tho month. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Armstrong. Cabled advico has been received that! Captain Ivan Jennings has received his promotion to major in France. He is a eon of Colonel Jennings, of Canter-* bury, who is a member of the Medical Board under the Military Service Act, and is at present in Palmerston. Majori Jennings is a Canterbury boy, and i 3 only 2-1. He was educated at thet Huntley School at Marton, ami Christ's College, Christchurch, anci subsequently took up his military! studies at the Duntroon Military College. When tho war broke out ha promptly joined the Forces, going away with the Otago Infantry, buti soon being transferred to the machine-" gun section and getting his captaincij and a responsible command. He was severely wounded in the first neek ofi tho campaign, his injuries necessitating ten months' treatment iiii military hospitals. On his recovery] he went to France after specialising in! machine-gun work, and word rowf come of his further advancement. .
Mr. T. H. Gibson, formerly master at Courlenay Place, and latt-er-i Jy registered letter clerk at the G.P.O.J has been appointed to succeed Sir. John Redmond as postmaster at Te Aro.

Mr. C. E. On the eve of his retirement onl superannuation, Mr. J. R. Hooper, senior parcels clerk of the Post and! Telegraph Department, Auckland, received, a presentation from his officers. In making the presentation, the. Chief Postmaster (Mr. Williamson) stated that since Mr. Hooper took oven the parcels business at Auckland! twenty-four years ago, the work in the district had increased twenty-fold.
According to advice from Home, tha Military Cross has .been awarded to Lieut. F. M. Turner, of tie Royal Newi Zealand Artillery. He left with the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force, and, with, the rank of captain, is now commanding No. 12 battery. • Second-Lieutenant William Arthur Gray, of Mount Eden, who has beon awarded the Military ■ Cross, in about twenty-seven years of age; and is an old boy of the Auckland Grammar Sohool, and a graduate of the Auckland University College. Ho had a; brilliant career, both as a scholar and an athlete. After several years at the Grammar School, during which ha gained-many prizes and scholarships, Lieutenant Gray gained a Gillies Scholarship, and commenced further scientific study as an undergraduate at Auckland. Graduating in Science in. 1910, he, at the same time, gainod a Senior University Scholarship, and the following year took his M_.Sc. degree, with first-class honours in mathematics. Subsequently he was engaged in civil engineering in Auckland, and followed that profession up to the time of his enlistment. Lieutenant Gray; was prominent in Auckland, both as a. cricketer and footballer. Ho was in both the first eleven and the first fifteen at the Grammar School, and played for the University Club's senior teams in both branches of sport.
Cable advice has been received by Mrs. E. E. Pailthorpe, of 30 Barker Street, that her son, Pte. E. E. A, Pailthorpe, 11/2359, was admitted to No. 3 General Hospital, Codford, od November 16, suffering from epilepsy, slight. ■
