INQUEST
Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, coroner, held an inquest .yesterday afternoon concerning the cause .of death of Sergeant John Wood, of tho Army Medical Corps, whoso body was found on one of the hatches of the Pateena while the vessel was ■on the way up from to. Lyttclton to Wellington. Dr. Kington Pvtfo,' who conducted a post-mortem examination,' said 1 the. stomach was greatly congested and inflamed, and l the brain was soft. In the absence of poison, the only oauso he could find for death was thatde-' ceased collapsed from seasiokness, being at the time already nffeotcd with pneumonia. Mr, Ct. F. Gibb, of Kelbura, a lifelong friend of the deceased, said l fhat Sergeant Wood, who was over 60 yoars of age, was an exceptionally healthy riian, except that bo suffered from erysipelas. He was a total-abstainer. After hearing other evidence, tho :oroner adjourned the inquest, in order to havo an analysis made ,of tho contents of the stomach.
