THE STRANDED ANTIOPE
, $ MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY. By Telegraph—Press Associating. Invercargill, September 26. A Magisterial Inquiry concerning the stranded barque Autiopo at tho Bluff was held to-day. Aftor hearing evidence, tlie members of the Court (Mr. G. Cruiekshank, S.M., and Captains Reed and Patterson, nautical assessors) decided that for some reason not sufficiently explained tho Ibarquo took a sudden sheer to port when passing the lightship, while being towed by tho tug with tho result that she went aground before the tug could do anything to avert it. With fair evidonco to guide tliem they were of opinion that the stranding was caused by a puro misadventure of the sea. It might be that with more local knowledge on tho part of the captain of the barque, or that if a local pilot had been steering, tho accident might not have occurred. On that, however, they could not express an opinion. They held that the captain and officers of tho Antiope were in no way to blame for tho disaster, and their certificates were ordered to be returned.
