" Official.—The United States has agreed to purchase the Danish West Indies from Denmark at the price of five mil- ' lions' sterling. , ' Now York, July 25. The New York "Times" prints a disnatch, from Copenhagen stating that a treaty has been negotiated for the purchase by the United States of the Dan-, ish West Indies for (We million pounds. 'J'ho treaty will shortly he submitted to • the Danish and United States Parliaments. It gives the United States possesion of the Islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and Santa Cruz,' [The three islands named are among the most westerly of the Leeward Islands, and lio to the east of Porto Rico. St. Thomas and St. John form>r>art of a small group called Virgin Islands, most of which aro British. Santa Cruz Is some distanco to the sonth.] BRITAIN PLEASED. Washington, July 25. British officials are gratified, that the United States will probably purchase , the Danish Islands, as Germany had been'negotiating for them wlien war broke out.
