THE TURF

HAWKE'S BAY MEETING ' SAM PAN WINS -TONE STEEPLE- • . . CHASE. By l'elegraph.-tSpecial Correspondent.) ■ • Hastings, Julv 1. The weather .was wet and cold for the second day of tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting. There was a fair attendance. Tho course was heavy after a night's rain. Tho totalisator handled ,£11,759, against ,£16,450 last year. The total tor the meeting was .£30,858, against last year ; Bodenham and Amber and White, the favourites, finished in tlie places in tho Hack Hurdles, but they were handsonioly defeated by the looally-trained Surtax, who -revelled in' the mud, and taking charge, a mile .from home, won very easily. Birkfnl was Tunning second over the laat half-mile, but in the straight ho tired badly/and the two favourites both passed bim. The- others were beaten off a long way. Wirokino scored very comfortably in the Hack Steeples. Otupai was a bit unlucky, as ho got into bother at a couple of fences. The winner gave a good exhibition of jumping, and will make a very useful horso over fences. Waiparapara finished very fast, and just cut Otupai out of second place. Captaiu Diek fell. ■In the Turamoo Hurdles Styrax. was a good favourite, ana in tho end he won easily from Glenorchy and Austin. Caaronns and Aruako fell'at-the top of the course. Kow raado most of the running from Czaronns and : Glenorchy,. but the litter's ohance was spoilt when-Cuaronus fell. The winner jumped well throughoat, and will ba a useful horso over .bigger fences, but on the Hawera tracks thero are no facilities for schooling horses .over, big fences. ~ Mnltum was the best backed in the Ladies' . Necklace, but once again the Napier horse had, to be . content with • second place. Tho winner turned up in the Karamu three'-ytar'-old Eylatus,' who did well under such a big weight. Toiday he was ridden in behind, and,, taking charge a furlong from home, he won nicely from Multum, who just beat Atuatoro. Janitor and Atuatoro made the early running, but the weight beat the first day's winner, and, he collapsed over ' the' last half furlong. Sam Pan, who now carries the colours of Mr. G. L. Stead, and is trained by T. ■ Qainlivan, quickly put 'his new. owner ,>n the right side.by winning the.June Steeplechase, after a great finisTi with Bravest. The winner was tailed off in the first mile, but over the last round he put 'in a wonderful run, and just got up in time to beat Eravest. . Golborne was third. 'Woplloomooroo went well for a mile and a half, when the going beat him. Nita also shaped well, and was prominent with Bravest the whole ■roy- The finishing ran of the winner was Mnsational, and he is likely to be sent to Sydney for the big spring meeting.

War Tax had the call on the machine in the Raukawa Hack Handican, with St. Omer next in public, favour." Backers gauged the situation well, for the pair Snished in the places. No Idea led down .lie back, and to .the. straight entrance, .vhen the favourite wont to the front. The winner had to be ke'ptjgoing to stall off St. Omer. Silenu's was a poor third, a. head in front of No Idea. The others were beaten off. The owner of St. Omer protested against the winner on the grounds of inconsistent running. After a hearing, extending for a considerable time, the Judicial Committee awarded the race to War Tax. ' It was quite dark when the final event was run, and the conrso was a sea of lrud. Several of the Tunners were well backed, arid after a good race Black Lupin won well from AVaiorewa, Cherry Blossom, and Sea Lord. THE RESULTS. By Telegraph—i'rsss. As«of.:»tion.
