MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY
JUDGMENT IN THE OPOURI CASE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Juno 2G. The adjourned Nautical Inquiry concerning the accident to the steamer Opouri on April 24 last whilst on the passage from tlreymouth to Lytt'.lton was resumed at Lyttelton to-day before .Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.JI. Captains Murray and Hutchinson acted as nautical assessors. The finding of the Court was as follows:—The Opouri was hound from Greymcuth to lyttelton, and after clearing Cape Campbell met a southerly gale and sea, and in order to escape the force of the latter was taken close in shore. The master was following the usual practice, and (Ud not appear to have, gone closer in shore than was the case with other vessels of similar tonnage. The vessel struck a submerged object, which in the opinion of the Court was a rock. Ihe Court is satisfied that the mnsier used all necessary precautions m navigating the ship, and ordered that the certificates of Captain Pearson and the seoend mate, Mr Brown,' should be returned. No order was made in. regard to costs.
