THE TURF

NAPIER PARK MEETING BRAVEST WINS PARK STEEPLECHASE. There was another good attendanco for tho Napier Park Club's concluding day's races, and big fields were again tho order. Tno results were against, backers who failed in the majority of events to anticipate correctly tho judgo's placings. The machine handled the sum of vt15,5!)0, as ' against .£16,745 on tho second day last year. The figures for the meeting were as against last year. Tho racing on the wholo was highly interesting, and tho big steeplechase was one of the finest jumping races ever seen on tho course.

No Idea' was the only scratching for ■the Meaneo Handicap, in which Utara was the best backed, with Perrier, Shaki and Conziaka following in that order on the-machine. Maisie Bell was troublesome, ut the post. At the barrier rise Shaki led Bio with Hymen next. Shaki was done- with at tho home turn, where Golden Glade took oharge.; Admiral Beatfy challenged a furlong from home and the two outsiders fought out a' good finish, the honours going to Golden Glade by a'head.' Perrier was right up, and then came Black Heart, who ran a greatly impiiOved race, and was ovidently benefited by his first day's outing. : Golden Marsh, runner-up to Czaronus on the-first' day, was favourite in the Hack' Hurdles, and he landed tho stake. At the start Portland Lady went out clear of Maryland, with Amber and White, Birkful and Golden March prominent of the others. Down tho back, Portland Lady gave way to Crawford, but Golden March joined the Hawera' horse at the last fence, and beat him in the ;run home. Czaronus, who carao from, a long way back, was third. The winner has been most consistent, as out of 'five starts .over fences he has been placedeach time. Crawford, did well, as he was one of the rear division going down the'back, but a well-sustained run took-him -to the front. He tired badly in'the run home, but can bo expected to do a lot better in his next outing/' Sea Lord and Goldenlyte were the order of favouritism in the Winter Oats Handicap. At'the jump off Goldenlyte, who stripped a' much improved horse, was first 1 away,. and he led down tho back 'from - Mount' Victoria, . Hushabye and Hygia. '• At the straight entrance Multifual and Ineuru challenged Goldenlyte, but he shook them off. Sea Lord and Whakahoki next' joined in, and after' a good finish the latter won by half a length from Sea Lord. Golden-(lyte-was right up, and then-camo. Immer, and Multifual. Tho winner' was sold some; time ago' for lOflgns., and the changehas done him good. He has built up "a lot. and is carrying more condition now than'ever previously. ', ' The sixteen acceptors ail lined up for , the Part Steeples, which was a splendid contest with good jumping throughout. The pace was set by Queen's Post. |. Bravest and The Chef strung out the field, but all were jumping: well. With a mile to go The Chef, .Bravest,', and Queen's Post were showing the' way to Bransfield, Vascular,-and Naupata, with Taihape and Freborne bringing up the rear.' Queen's Post went out' by herself at", the six furlongs, and down the back Merry Lad and Bravest wero chasing her. Across the bottom Bravest, again became prominent, and he and Queen's Post jumped the last fence together. A ■good' finish saw the brother to Corozoh win by a head, with Nita, Fagot, BransI field, and .Vascular following in that I order. The winner scored on his merits, [ and if ho keeps sound ho should turn out'a useful horse-this season. Precious Metal and The Chef fell. .

Turohau was withdrawn from the Hunt Club' Steeples, and the investing publio then summed up the race as a good thing for J. M. Cameron's other representative; Korangi; who is a fine looking Malatiia gelding. KoHrangi was. also well 'backed, and after the other competitors had made divers mistakes this pair and Waiparapara were left .in' it over the final-circuit. A fine display of jumping was given, and Korangi was looking all over a winner at the last fence, but lie fell, and Waiparapara then ran home from Korirangi, while Korangi was remounted and. got third place. ■~6ladful.and-Eursefiller, who..were like-, ly to monopolise the attentions of backers in the Poraito Hurdles, were withdrawn on. the. course. After this Styrax and Austin were evenly backed, and tho fornier scored easily at the finish. When they were dispatched. oh the journey Aruake went-off in front and led for a mile, when Styrax ran up to him, and from this point the Tace was a procession, the Hawera horse winning by several lengths,, while . Aniake just beat Austin for. second place.

In the concluding event Aurore' was withdrawn, and after, u good race St. Diner won from' Cherry Blossom By three lengths. '.'-.•'" ' MEANEE HANDICAP.
