ANGLICAN BOYS' HOMES SOCIETY

THE .ANNUAL MEETING,

The annual meeting of the Anglicim Boys' Homes Society was held in the- • Diocesan Rooms last night, Mr. J. W. Henderson presiding. The annual re-. port and the statement 'of accounts were adopted. The report stated, inter alia, thai the excess of income over expenditure for the past two years, together with sub-.' stantial donations and a donation in each year of £50 from the T. G. Macarthy Trust, enabled the executive to pay the liabilities on the property, amounting to £4.00, and bo to secure an unencumbered title. The ready and liberal response w> the chairman's appeal at Christmas enabled the executive to pay off a temporary loan of £100 from the bank". The demand for ad--mission to the home is so urgent' that. the executive is convinced of the cessity of providing further accommodation, either by opening a second home or by adding to the present one. Hitherto the income has not been sufficient to warrant any action being taken; but the support now being accorded to the society, in appreciation of the work it is doing, should enable the executive to make a forward movement in this direction during tho coming year. In addition to the income shown in the balance-sheet, the earnings of-the boys, to the amount of £18, Have been used (at the express wish of the hoys) in the purchase of clothing and boots. The home is at present full, the inmates comprising fifteen boys. _ One boy left during the year, and his place was immediately filled from the urgent cases waiting admission. An "In Memoriam" gift of £56 16s. was received during the year from a Manawatu resident, whose son. was killed at Gallipoli, and this sum the executive proposes, to utilise in an approved memorial form. :

Office bearers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—Patron, the Bishop of Wellington; president, Mr} J W. Henderson; vice-presidents, the Rev. G. B. Stephenson, the Rev. A. L. Hansell, the Rev. W. Fancourt, and Mr. J. W. A. Marchant; Hon. treasurer, Miss Mildred Alkaan-Marchant; hon. secretary, Mr. E. H. Ballachey: executive,, Miss Robinson, Mesdames Reeves, and Anson, the Rev. W. H. Walton, and Messrs. 6. G. Bridges and G. Shirteliffo.

The chairman moved: "That the executive be given power,to extend the work of the society, by the purchase or lease of a new home or increasing ,the present accommodation, or both." ; i . -

Mr. Marchant seconded the resohh tion on the understanding that the financial position should be satisfactory, before any new expense was incurred. He suggested that there should be some substantial sum in handb before the second'home'was Btarted.

Miss Marchant pointed out that the. present sound state of the finances was due principally to tho splendid response which had been made to the chairman's Christmas appeal. ;It might not. he wise to rely upon this source of income during the coming year.

Mr. Walton, warned tho meeting against giving the executive power to depart from the principle of the original scheme. If the present accommodation wero increased so as to admii a greater number of boys, the place would become what was'known as an "institution" rather than a "home." Ho favoured the society's work being extended by means of now homes only. He moved as an amendment to delete the words "or by increasing the present accommodation or both" from the chairman's motion.

The amendment lapsed for want of a, seconder, and the motion was carried.
