ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES

AN INQUEST. The death occurred unexpectedly at tho Hospital at 4 a.m. yesterday of 'Henry. James Chapman,' railway porter, who mot with an accident near the Pctone station en Saturday night. Deceased was assisting; to collect tickets, and fell from a carriage platform. . His left 'foot was severely crushed, and bad to be amputated. Since the operation lie had* been progressing favourably, and it was thought ho would recover, but on Wednesday evening he developed pneumonia and pleurisy, and this was the cause of death. He was a single man, 29 years of age, and formerly a resident of. Dunedin. His father was the late Mr. Thomas Chapman, of the southern city. 'An inquest was opened before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., yesterday, 'when evidence of identification and medical evidence was tendered. An adjournment was then decided upon, in order that the evidence bearing on tho accident might be heard at a later date.

FALL PROM A TRAIN.

A man, whoso name was said to be Edward Rogers, residing_ at/Wellington, fell off the 9.45 p.m. train shortly after it left NgaJiaurqnga for the City yesterday. The train was immediately stopped, and Rogers was picked up in a dazed condition, apparently very little the worse for his. adventure.
