THE WANGANUI RIVER
ITS FUTURE CONTROL. i ' By Teloeranh.—PreßS Association. 1 Wanganui, April 20. | A deputation representing Wanga--1 nui, Taumarunui, and other interested local bodies waited upon the Prima Minister to-day, and -urged ' that the Government should take over control of the Wanganui River, and run a State steamer service. The deputationists said the volume of water in the river was decreasing yearly, owing to the denudation of tlie bush in the hinterland, and that permanent works were necessary to maintain the river in a navigable state. Mr. Massey said he recognised that the river was a national highway, and he believed the time would como -when the request of the deputation would be carried into effect, but nothing in that direction was .possible while the war lasted. The Prime Minister promised to get an expert report on the river.
