The Hon. James Allen. (Minister 'of Defence) has reoeived from His Excellency tho Governor,. Lord. • Liverpool, copies of letters received by him concerning the kindness shown to recruits from Tahiti wlio recently passed through .New...Zealand, , One is from the British Consul at' Papeete, aud is as follows: — "lii reference to 1 the French recruits from. Tahiti, who' have lately passed thiough New Zealand-on their way to Noumea l and France, I have the honour to enclose herewith a copy of a letter which I have this day received from His Excellency M. Gustav Julien, Governor of this colony, in which he expresses in tho name of the, people of Tahiti, and that ef his Government and himself personally, sincere, thanks and appreciation for all the attention and kindness which have been extended by Your Excellenoy and tho people of New Zealand towards these recruits."

M. Julien's letter is as follows: — "It has been conveyed to me'through M. Chayet, the Consul-General for France at Sydney, and through him, M. Rigoreau, our Consul at Auckland, that the_ two Tahitian contingents are on their pasage, and that during their stay in English territory had been the recipients of . most extreme attention. In the name of our Island inhabitants, granted for the first occasion the honour of serving France on the battlefields of Europe, also in tho name of the representatives of these people, as well as in my own name and that of the Government of the Republic, I have to express my unalterable gratitude to the British authorities and the worthy inhabitants of Australia and New Zealand for- the kindness shown by them to our soldiers, defenders in the same great cause as ours. I remain, I sir, with the assuranco of my highest respect and all oiy best wishes. —(Signed) G. Julien."
