FALSE PRETENCES
A YOUNG WOMAN DECEIVED
Mr. W. G; Riddell, S.M., presided at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, when Arthur Edward X)o Grundey T'ron6on was oharged with obtaining £3 10s. in money and a camoo ring (valued at £5) from a young woman by means of false pretences. ChiefDetective Boddam prosecuted,- while tho accused, who pleaded not guilty, conducted his own defence, but failed to convince the Magistrate of his innocence. ' •
. From the evidence, it appeared that the acoused was a married man, 27 years of ago, and belonged to Hamilton. He met the young woman in question- on January 29 last at Lower Hutt, represented himself as a single man, and became engaged to her. Early in March, accused told- a story about a dying sister in Kamo, and expressed a desire to visit the deathbed. He was without the necessary means to travol nortli, and induced the young woman to advance him £3 10s., and -the ring, with which he was to raise further money. The young woman did-not see the acoused from March 19 until after his arrest. Tronson went into the witness-box to explain that he had good intentions, but under cross-examination he was forced to admit that this was not his first offence of the kind. The Magistratft imposed a sentence of six months''impiisonment, with hard labour. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. Ernest Devoin appeared on remand on a charge of attempting to murder Louisa White by shooting her on March last. A further remand for a week was granted, bail being allowed in the sum of £200,' and sureties of £200. INFORMATIONS DISMISSED. .Differences amongst tho stokehold crow of the steamer Arawa resulted in two charges of assault being • heard. Albert Tappin was charged with assaulting Gustaf Helin, wnilo Frederick Barclay was charged with assaulting Fraus Snloneu. After evidence had been hf«x'd, both infornmtvm* wcru dismissed.
RETURNED TO THEIR SHIPS
James Brandon and Sidney Edward Simmons, who absented themselves from '11.M.5. Turakina without first, obtaining leave, wero directed to pHy court costs. -They will both bo returned to the steamer.

The Magistrate directed that ho : I be returned to his ship. MISCELLANEOUS. Robert Dawson, 32 years of age, who was convicted of an indecent act in the Oriental Bay Reserve, was fined £5, with the option of going to gaol for one month. 1 Edward Mulcahy, charged with indecency in Tni Street, was remanded for a week for medical observation. George William Geggie was charged witli the embezzlement of £5 12s. at Portland, N.S.W., oil August 2, 1915. On the application of Chief Detective Bcddam, the accused was remanded until Friday next, when an escort is expected to arrive from Australia. , Charles Edmond Miller, who did not appear to answer a charge of drunkonness, was ordered to forfeit, his bail (£1). Ethel Birch, charged with drunkenness, was remanded for a week. A first-ofiending inebriate was also dealt with.
Charles Edmondston Leask, appearing on remand on a charge of vagrancy, was further remanded until Wednesday next.
