OUR WATER SUPPLY

SLIGHT RECOVERY YESTERDAY! Wellington was visited yesterday by a stiff north-westerly' gale, accompanied by rain, a distinct novelty for theso parts in light of recent experiences. Unfortunately the rain was not very heavy; still it was rain, and that is what is badly needed throughout the whole of the district. At noon .yesterday tiio level of the water in the Morton Dam at Wainui had fallen to 19ft. oin. below the spill-way, the lowest it has over been for lack of wator. Thanks to the light rain which' fell intermittently throughout the day, the level had risen 13 inches by 5 o'clock last evening. The rainfall at the waterworks from the time it commenced until 5 p.m. yesterday was .60 inches— a, littlo over half an inch. , One pleasant feature to be noted is that during the later summer months the .water'from Wainui has not been tainted with that "fishiness" which has given trouble for several years past. This "flavour" .is usually.' associated with the driest months of. .tlie year, : and this summer having been "the driest on record, it was to be expected that the nuisanco would almost bo bound to recur, but so far the water has been entirely without taint of any kind. There is still the greatest need for economy in the use of water in Wellington, and the City Engineer lias gone as far as to suggest that people should substitute shower for plunge baths until the water crisis is over.
