By Teloßraph—Press Association—Copyrigtht ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.)
London, March 11. Mr. Massey, war correspondent to tha "Daily Telegraph."- in an on the defences of Egypt, says that it is doubtful whether any part of tho European battlefront/'is ns safe as the Suez Canal Great Britain has made a vast expenditure in money and labour to secure tho freedom of the waterway connecting the seas of the East and _ the West, but no man of tho Dominions or Great Britain will crudge it. Unless the enemy makes similar arrangements, he cannot bring an army numerically equal to ours to tho Canal, nor remain there two days because of the lack of water. Mr. Massey was much impressed by. the enthusiastic labour of the _ troops in preparing the lines. One division wan composed of veterans, who had proved their courage in the item days at Gallipoli. Somo remained on duty longer than their health warranted, because they wished to impress upon the reinforcements how vital it was that the younger nations should show Great Britain her stock was true. They left Gallipoli ill with jaundice and other forms of sickness, but three weeks in the desoit recuperated and made them ready for fresh trials. A commander said : "When tho men learnt they were to occupy tho first line, they were intensely satisfied.' Work for the Empire acted as a tonic."
