LIQUOR FOR A SOLDIER Mr. D 6. A. Cooper, S.M., was on the bench in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, and among the cases which came before him, was one in which Peter Glancy was charged with drunkenness and with acting as agent for the purchase of liquor for a member of the Defence Forces, who intended to consume the liquor away from the premises where it was purchased. Inspector Hendrey stated that the defendant had been observed by the police in the act of committing the offence. The penalty, which might be imposed in such a ease was £100. The Magistrate recorded a conviction, and imposed a fine of 405., with expenses 6s. 9d. Default was fixed at seven days' imprisonment. On the chargo of drunkenness, Glancy was convicted and discharged. THEFT. .Tolin Wilson, alias Smith, for stealing two pairs of trousers, valued at 255.,' was fined £2 and ordered to pay tho sum of 4s. expenses, in default to go to gaol for seven days. Hurry Panniger was convicted of the theft of a brief bag, and was fined 205., with witness's expenses 4s. He was fined a further sum of 10s. for drunkenness, and, in default of payment of the fines, is to go to gaol for seven days. VAGRANCY. Myrtle Schultzc, seventeen years of nge, pleaded guilty to a charge of being (in idlo and disorderly person, without j kuvlul means of support. She was sent to gaol for a month, and, with the Gov- ' ornor's approval, she is later to bo i transferred to an industrial school. In I the • meantime she will be kept apart from other prisoners. Samuel .James Horton Smith was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when callccl upon on a charge of being found by liigut (without lawful
excuse) on tho City Corporation property. WITHOUT PAYING HIS FARE. A traveller by the ferry _ steamer Duchess from Day's Bay to Wellington on January B—W.B—W. D. Buchatian by name—was charged with failure to pay j, his fare. He was convicted and the j Magistrate imposed a line of 205., in a addition to which the had to pay costs totalling 10s. ° BY-LAW CASES. | The following were penalised fot ] breaches of tho by-laws relating to tho 1 lighting of vehicles in the city at night j time:—Georee Alexander A\ addle lined c 205., with costs 145.; Alexander Ross f and Victor Smith each fined os., with [ costs 75.; and William Jackson ordered i to pay Court costs 7s. t As the owner of stock (two calves) j found wandering 011 the Slain Road, Karori, Mrs. Alice was fined . 205., witli costs 7s. < MISCELLANEOUS. j Peter Mulcahey and Thomas Reeves , were lined '10s. each for drunkenness, j the alternative in each case being seven days' imprisonment. 011 a similar charge, Charles Fowler was fined 10s., J in default to undergo forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Two first-olfendiug inebriates were leniently treated. James Smith, who was in a very weak state when he was called upon to answer a charge of.-drunkenness, was remanded for a week for medical treatment. Henry Bell, who was guilty of threatening behaviour while drunk, was , fined 10s., with the option of going to , gaol for forty-eight hours. For failing to attend drill, Gilbert Sutherly was fined 10s., with costs 75.. Edith Ilorne, appearing 011 remand on charges of drunkenness and vagrancy, was further remanded -until Tuesday ' next. Thomas Elliott,, appearing 011 remand on a charge of assault, was further remanded until Friday next, and allowed tail.
