TORTURED BY THE AUSTRIANS
BRUTAL TREATMENT OF RUSSIAN PRISONERS. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright Petrograd, January 30. The Russian Headquarters Staff has issued the evidence of six Russian prisoners who cscapcd from Austria. They witnessed the execution of four of tlieir comrades for refusing to work on the enemy's defences. J'ivft hundred prisoners participated in the refusal, and four wore selected for execution. Austrian cadets carried out the sentence. tn Austrian deserter confirms the statement-. He adds that his regiment was sent from Breenerbad to fores tlio prisoners to work. Whon tlioy persisted in refusing twenty of them were tied to trees, in a brutal manner. Some implored the torturers to shoot them. After two hours al! were unconscious from syncope. One non-commissioned officer was literally crucified. The remaining prisoners still refused to work, and five were ordored to be shot in tlio presence of their comrades. .-So many cadets volunteered for the execution that each victim was shot by a separate batcli.
