TAINUI DUE MONDAY. Tf the Qliaw-Savill liner Tainui.hae completed discharge of the Auckland portion of her London cargo, she will leave the northern port for Wellington on Saturday morning. She will therefore arrive here on Monday, and after landing the . local portion of her cargo she will proceed to southern ports to complete discharge.NEWS FROM THE PACIFIC SLOPE. Advice has been received in Wellington to the effect that the Union Company's Waitomo left Vancouver for Wellington on Thursday last. No confirmation of this has been received locally. The vessel was not scheduled to sail before Saturday last at earliest. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. On Saturday last at Auckland Mr. Boss Clark, chief officer of the Union Company's Katoa, was paid a; mail,, compliment by the sailors of the vessel. Mr. Clai'lt is' about to go to the training Camp in preparation for active service, and his men on the boat desired to show that they wished him well. They mustered at midday, and presented the chief officer with a handsome wristlet watch, engraved "From the sailors of the Katoa," and took the opportunity to tell him that they respected him ae an officer and a gentleman, and wished him all the good luck that'was due to him. Captain W. A. Martin, of the Union Company's service, is at present in Wellington awaiting instructions. „ Mr. Langland, second officer of the Kauri, has returned from Sydney after holiday leave.
Captain Appleiyard, who WO6 chief officerof the Aorangi, and of late has been acting as master of the A. and A. Line's chartered steamer Parattuh, has returned to New Zealand, and has gone south for orders.
Mr. TV. J. Jones has signed on the Jfararoa as third officer. Mr. H. Hawkcswood has succeeded Mr. P. Hubbard a 6 assistant purser.of the Westra'ila. A general average of 12 per cent, has been declared on tnc cargo of the A. and A. Line's chartered steamer Riouw from New York to New Zealand ports. • The small coastal steamer Opawa is at present, being overhauled here. She will not resume running to Blenheim till Saturday next It.M.S. Makura left Auckland in continuation of her journey from Sydney to Vancouver at 12.25 p.m. yesterday. She is due at Her destination on; February 10. ■The Shaw-Savill liner Pakeha, is expected to leave Tiraaru to-day for Lytteltmi. 31ie will sail from .the .latter, port for \Tsliington on Saturday, being due here on Sltiff'ay. After taking in the Wellington p-rtlon of her London pargo the Pakcha will go on to northern ports to complete. Bound for the Chatham Islands, the Rtmitangi loft Lyttelton at 11.25 a.m. yesterday. She will make another trip to tho islands oil return to the southern port. R.M.S. Ruahine, of the New Zealand Shipping Company's fleet, is expected in - port from Gisborne to-day. Departure will bo token for liondon on Tuesday next. On Friday next tho chartered steamer Ashburton is due at Wellington, from Gisborne. Homeward loading will be completed here, and the' vessel -will clear for London on Monday, January 3i. The Auckland Harbour Board have notified the Marine Department that on ana after to-day tho characteristic of tho light on the SanSspit Beacon off Devonport will be cjjangcd from a fixed white light to a flashing red light ■ showing two seconds' light and four seconds' eolipso. The charts, etc., affected are tho following Admiralty Charts Nos. 1896 and 1970; Now Zealand Pilot, eighth edition, 1908, chapter 2, page 38. The 0. and D. liner Indrabaxah is duo at Wellington from Napier on Sunday next to fill up for London. The vessel will sail early next week for the Home port, At TVanganui tho New Zealand Shipping Company's Paparoa is taking in a large quantity of frozen meat. Sho will not arrive hero before Sunday morning, and will be'dispatched for London on Wednesday, February 2. A shortego of labour has been responsible for delaying tho Westport Coal Company's Oanopus here. She will not get away for Westport till to-morrow morning. ' The Government training ship Amokura fs expected to get away for the Kermadec Islands this morning. According to the "Sydney Shipping List" the owners of the-steamer Indian Monarch, which was abandoned at sea on fire whilst bound to Australian and New Zealand ports from New York, wore loth to lose the vessel. Immediately the news that tho crew had left her was received, they com-, munieated with Captain Gillies by cable to ascertain just what condition she was in when abandoned, with a view no doubt to sending out a • search steamer in the hopo of picking her up, and in reply received the following message:—"Condition hopeless; think no chance of being towed In. ■ •
