; ; OFFENSIVE IN THE SOUTH SUSPENDED' ' HOW THE ENEMY HAS SUFFERED By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Rec. January 13, 7.30 p.m.) Petrograd, January 12. The Russians' offensive on the southern front has been suspended for the present, having achieved its object Of diverting the enemy from France and the Balkans. The enemy has now brought up ienforcements, and it is therefore not expedient to press further. Tlie Austro-Gcruian losses in three weeks totalled from seventy to one hundred thousand. The enemy's efforts,to dislodge the Russians from Chartorysk failed. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The High Commissioner reports:— London, January 13, 3.20 a.m. "At Olay-Veyk the German attempt to cross the Missey failed. "There was bayonet fighting east of Plakanen, to the Russians' advantage. "Two lines of tho enemy's wire wero cut on the railroad at Ponievesz, and the Germans chased out of their trenches." THE RECUPERATION OF RUSSIA. ("Times" and Sydney '-'Sun" Services.) (Rec. January 13, 5.5 p.m.) Lontfon, January 12. The "Times's" 'correspondent at Petrograd optimistically describes the recuperation of Russia and of the splcnaid armies at the front. A high officer states that Russia, is able to go on as long as she is wanted. Her technical services are constantly improving, and the output of munitions is doubling. They are confident in the strength and readiness of the country to endure any trials. "The people are determined to vanquish their inveterate Teutonic foe."
