MAGISTRATE'S COURT
A RESERVED JUDGMENT. Reserved judgment was_ given by Mr. D. 6. A. Cooper, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday in the caso in which Eva Marie Meyer, married woman, of' Roseneath, sued Lizzie Bcnge, wife of Richard Benge, of Aro Street, and Jean Christesen, wife or Martin Christesen, of Roseneath, for assault. " The evidence was of a contradictory nature, but, after considering it and visiting the scene of the assault, tTie Magistrate was of opinion that the evidence of the informant and her witnesses was to be believed in preference to that of the defendants. The informant had suffered considerably as a result of tlie assault. Each of the defendants would be fined £2, and they would liave to pay the informant's costs, £4 95., between them. Mr. J. J. M'Grath appeared for, the informant, while Mr. P. W. lackson appeared for the' defendants. THEFT. A young man, named William Penrose Hicks, pleaded guilty to the t'hefl. of a watch, valued at 10s,, and a suit of clothes, valued at £5 10s. The clothes had boon sold to a second-hand dealer for 155., the watch being found in the accused's possession. The Magistrate imposed fines totalling £4, and ordered Ilicks to refund / the sum of 155., obtained from the sccond-liand dealer. Default was fixed at one month's imprisonment. OTHER BUSINESS. John Chambers was charged with the theft of £2 from the person of an unknown man, lie was remanded until Wednesday next. For insobriety, Henry Burrows was fined 205., the "alternative being three days' imprisonment.
