QUEEN OF THE ALLIES
BIG CONCERT IN SYDNEY. Mr. John Hopkins, of Wellington, ivho has been organising the "Queen of the Allies" function in Sydney, arrived from that port by the Ulimaroa yesterday, to fulfil his engagement as organiser of tho Mardi Gras at Napier. Mr. Hopkins states that he found Sydney "a big proposition" to liandlo at first, but now that the public are seized ot the idea the competition is j|oing along swimmingly, and each of the candidates' committees are hard at work raking in tho votes. The positions of the candidates,are announced every day at noon, but not until November 10 will any figures be made known, leaving only 28 hours for tho final sprint. The candidates and their nominators are: Mrs. Frank Buckle (Masonic Club), Mrs. George Sargent (Sargent's, Ltd.), Mrs. Kate Dwyer (Sydney Wharf Labourers' Union), Mrs. J. JoyntonSmitli (Paddington), Mrs. George' Black (Police), Miss Hildred Morris (Commerciftl Travellers), Miss liolen Beattio (Marrickville), Miss Laurie O'Brien
(Anti-German League), Miss Dorothy Bruntou (J. 0. Williamson, Ltd.), Miss M. Kinsella (Mark Foy, Ltd.), Mrs. '11.I 1 . H. Hicks (Mascot), Miss Minna Roberts (Tramway Servico), Miss May Matthews (Public .Service Association), Sirs. T. Danks (Waterloo), Miss Maggie Moore (Professional Musicians' Union), Miss Dorothy Cummings (Northern (Suburbs). Votes are being sold at one penny cacli. Things theatrical are only fairly prosperous in Sydney, and thoro aro some managements experiencing uncertain times. The two outstandingly pood shows which wiire attracting the public are "Potash and Perlmntter," soon to visit Now Zealand and the "Strollers," who had a phenomenal run in Sydney.
