DESPERATE FIGHTING IN SERBIA
GREEK SHUFFLING TO BE ENDED OFFER OF CYPRUS austbians evacuate ; CZERNOWITZ IORE RUSSIAN SUCCESSES HEAVY FIGHTING IN : ; THE WEST GERMAN MASSED ATTACKS HURLED BACK Sir Edward Carson has eased the political tension at Homo by making a frank declaration of his inability to see eye to eye with the National Government in the conduct of the war in the Near East. His explanation has localised the trouble. An agitation has sprung up in London for the presence at the Imperial Council of the ' and New Zealand Premiers, and Mr. Massey has received from the High Commissioner a cablegram in which the Hon. T. Mackenzie ■urges the Premier to act upon the suggestion. This, says Mr. Massey, is a matter for Cabinet. The Germans, both in Serbia and on the Eastern front, have been severely handled; Vrania has been taken by the Austro-Germans, but is said to have been retaken. Semendria is also said to have fallen. Greece is to be asked, definitely, to come down from the top of the fence and declare her views; by way of an attractive bait, the British are said to have offered the Greeks the island of Cyprus. In the Western theatre the Germans have launched great and little attacks, but in 110 case have they done anything with their gains. The Russian pressure in the East is being vigorously developed, and further success ia reported. '
