BIBLE IN STATE SCHOOLS LEAGUE
At a meeting of the Dominion Execu- . tivo:. otf the . Bible-in-Stafce, Schools League, held in the office of the league, • Wellington,; the . Primate .(Bishop Nevill), the president of the league, in Lhe chair, supported by the Rev. Dr. l Gibb, Bishop •' Sproi't, .Commissioner Hodder, Rev. J. J. Lewis, Hon. J. G. W. Aitken (treasurer of tho league), arid others,: the -following resolution was carried-: unanimously, - "Tho executive of.'the _ Bible-in-Schools League, having received from Canon Garland intimation ;of his resignation of-, the position of organising secretary to the league, regretfully agree to accept ,the. samo. In doing so they would place on record an expression of high appreciation of the: work done by Canon Garland, who devoted himself to the furtheranco of the movement with a tireless" enthusiasm; and in the dis- : charge of . the delicate, and difficult duties involved in his leadership' displayed a. skill and wisdom : which marked him out as pre-eminently worthy of the trust and esteem always- folt for him by the executive.: .It :is only, right,to add that'the arrest: the movement lias suffered- lias been in 110 -respect due to any ; defect on Canon .Garland's part-. Tho outbreak of the .'.war, ' which affected every interest- 'in'i't'he . British Empire,'put ari end,-as isVell-known, for' some time to the' active of our "campaign; and it is -hardly, open to question that but for: this and other hindrances due to the samo cause the. issue'-; might' have . beein' crowned with' success. The executive desire to emphasise tho fact that a large, number of members of;Parliament;—nearly one-, half—were returnod pledged to vote in favour- of the .referendum—a number which,' but; for tie circumstances under winch the election was- held, might easily have been a. decided majority.". ■ It .was reported that a sum 0f'£2195 9s. 2d. had been raised by members: of the league to provide ambulances for. tile' Expeditionary Force, -.and that a sum 0f,£2000, sufficient to provide four ambulances, had been handed to the : Minister of Defence. It was resolved that', the .balance of £195 . 9s. 2d.' be handed; over to the Government, to go to.: the fund for; providing.hospital accommodation at Rotorna for wounded soldiers returning from the front. The Rev. H. H. Robjohns, B.Sc. (formerly general secretary to the league in the Auckland province); was appointed . acting-secretary; of - the league. • - •
