In doing so they would place on record an expression of high appreciation of the: work done by Canon Garland, who devoted himself to the furtheranco of the movement with a tireless" enthusiasm; and in the dis- : charge of . the delicate, and difficult duties involved in his leadership' displayed a. skill and wisdom : which marked him out as pre-eminently worthy of the trust and esteem always- folt for him by the executive.: .It :is only, right,to add that'the arrest: the movement lias suffered- lias been in 110 -respect due to any ; defect on Canon .Garland's part-. The executive desire to emphasise tho fact that a large, number of members of;Parliament;—nearly one-, half—were returnod pledged to vote in favour- of the .referendum—a number which,' but; for tie circumstances under winch the election was- held, might easily have been a. decided majority.". ■ It .was reported that a sum 0f'£2195 9s. 2d. had been raised by members: of the league to provide ambulances for. tile' Expeditionary Force, -.and that a sum 0f,£2000, sufficient to provide four ambulances, had been handed to the : Minister of Defence. It was resolved that', the .balance of £195 . 9s. 2d.' be handed; over to the Government, to go to.: the fund for; providing.hospital accommodation at Rotorna for wounded soldiers returning from the front.
