PRICE OF BUTTER

A REDUCTION ANNOUNCED. From to-day the prico of butter will ha reduced from Is. 9d. to Is. 7d. per lb., consequent upon tho arrival of the new season's supplies from the north. In some cases in Wellington butter has been sold retail in Wellington for I's. Sd. per lb. for some time past. Tho indications at present point to a good season, and in all probability there will bo further prico announcements made before the end of tho month.

'l'he Prime Minister was asked yesterday whether, in view of the reduction in tho price of butter in New Zealand, tlio Government would now bo prepared to allow export to be resumed. "My advice is," said Mr. Massey, "that butter is coming in freely now, and I think it will soon be possible for us to remove the embargo upon export altogether. My correspondence goes to show that all tlio factories ill the Auckland Province, and most of those in the Taranaki Province, liavo commenced operations, although the supply of milk is very small now as compared with what it will bo in two or three months." Mr. Massey said that the embargo had been rigidly enforced. A few days ago he had allowed a small shipment to leavo Auckland on condition that the price in Auckland was reduced, and the prico was reduced.
